Movie Review All about Eve

The tape sometimes resembles just a filmed theatrical production: simple camera movements, the whole film is dialogues in different scenery. But, again, it only seems so at first glance. After all, one of the main differences between theater and cinema is the angle of view from which the viewer looks at what is happening. In the theater, the actors and the director work at once for the first rows of the stalls, and for the balconies on the sides, playing at all 180 degrees. But the movie camera looks exactly where the director points it, thus allowing the viewer to "limit" the viewing angle. Another component of the theatricality of the film is the almost complete absence of cinematic techniques.

And that's exactly what Mankevich does, hiding Eva's true face from the audience until the last moment. Despite the fact that the heroine is in almost every frame, it is only at the end of the film that we finally see her alone, in despair in the dressing room. But even this is not a detached objective view, but rather the peeping of another character who is standing under the door and sees this picture. Similarly, the voiceover, which is traditionally considered a manifestation of the "laziness" of the screenwriter, is needed rather in order to orient the viewer from whose point of view we are looking at this mysterious Eve. Yes, Mankevich is not Hitchcock, he does not play with the camera, but, nevertheless, he received an Oscar for directing.

Unfortunately, all the actresses were left without statuettes, even the unsurpassed Betty Davis. Despite the fact that Davis was already one of the most respected actresses in the history of Hollywood at that time, it was the role of Margot in "All about Eve" that became famous in her career. And perhaps this is not accidental. Davis herself in many ways resembled her heroine: the same uncompromising, somewhat conflicted, often dismissive. Even in her personal life, the similarity remained: shortly after filming, Davis married Gary Merrill, who played her husband in "All about Eve".

But Davis is not the only Hollywood star to be seen in the film. A short role in "All about Eve" was played by the then completely unknown Marilyn Monroe. And even in the scanty time that she appears on the screen, it's easy to believe that she will become one of the most famous actresses in the history of American cinema - so young Marilyn attracts the eye.

However, "All about Eve" is a film not only about actresses. Mankevich, a screenwriter, is quite sharply critical of show business, which requires the sacrifices of those who want to get into it. After all, as the tape shows, to become a star, talent itself is not enough — all actresses have more than enough of it. But in order to get the opportunity to show their talent, women have to be ruthless and even cruel to each other. And when at the end (or at the beginning, because the movie starts and ends with one scene) Eva is rewarded for her merits, the only thing you can think about at this moment is that it really cost everything. And, like all the best films, "All about Eve" allows each of us to find the answer to this question on our own.
